Once a grand Victorian primary school over six levels, this building lay derelict for ten years before refurbishment started. Our office was located within this building for one year during the design stage of work, giving us a very real and clear understanding of the building and its spaces. The developed design created open flexible floor levels that are accessed from the existing end stairwells and from a new central lift and stair. Many of the floors have been designed specifically to suit the needs of relocated social work departments, attracted by the access to transport links and the opportunity to have bespoke office space. Similar to the design process at Orr Street the requirements of the varied users are quite different. On the ground floor a more community based use is incorporated within a social work day-care centre for local elderly folk.
