"The Sands of Time": Cairomore informationThis project aims at establishing a state of the art complex of exhibits and facilities, which will accommodate all Pharaonic periods, and will provide access to information and future knowledge. With the support of new technology, more effective and efficient dissemination of information can be achieved, enabling the New Museum to be a source of enjoyable, entertaining, educational and cultural experiences for all visitors. "Lives of great men all remind us Our proposal begins with the simplest 'footprint in the sand': a line. In the manner of the temple complexes of the ancient Egyptians, the line represents a strongly defined route through the heart of the building. This route - a Grand Gallery - would be a means of accessing all the public spaces at several levels. At each end of this gradually- rising route would be a connection to contrasting landscapes. At the lowest part of the Grand Gallery, visitors would enter and turn from the vibrant city of Cairo; at the higher end, they would emerge near the top of the rocky plateau to view the Pyramid field of Giza from the roof terrace. A study of the existing contours of the site and the areas requested in the brief shows that the site and the programme can be roughly bisected by a diagonal line - the route of the Grand Gallery. This results in two dynamic interlocking wedges to each side of the Grand Gallery; related to the direction of the desert and screened by the Gallery wall, would be the large exhibition spaces with potential long views to the Pyramids ; related to the direction of the City and accessed through a series of tall portals would be storage, conservation workshop, Education Centre, Children's Museum and all the ancillary spaces of the 'museum machine'. |
