Set within a derelict site, surrounded by housing this nursery project design was intended to stimulate improvement within the local area and provide much needed places for local children. A sweeping external wall edge softens the harsh edges of sounding street edges, adding colour and fun to an otherwise barren environment. Children should be given the change to live, play and learn in better spaces. Often facilities are so stripped back it can be hard to tell the difference from one institution to another, school, hospital, office etc. We approach projects attempting to create spaces that are fun and feel right for the users be that children, families, office workers etc. Here the street edge is closed, secure and in scale with the surrounding houses and at the back the play-space is smaller in scale, open and private with class spaces spilling into it. Govan Initiative has since merged with another development trust and redefined its funding priorities, putting this project on hold for now.
