Kolkata Book Fair Pavilion, India

With a budget so limited (£25k) and a brief so grand (200m2) it seems like an almost impossible challenge to deliver this project for the Lighthouse. With that in mind our design is based on a simple structure of giant books. Vertical open book like structures, formed in timber frames with ply lining, provide enclosure to the different zones of the pavilion. A small shop, reading space, lecture area, outdoor reading space and some service spaces are all accessed via ramps from either side. Dramatic internal and external spaces run into each other and provide an ever-changing sequence of volume and light. To be built in India the orientation of glazing and shading was considered to be fundamental to the success of the design for the users.
