The ‘radial house’ is a theme developed in our sketchbooks over the past 8 years when occasionally spectacular sites have been presented to us. This context, beside a loch (to the south) and overlooking a gentle waterfall (to the north) was the perfect opportunity to test the radial house designs. Approached from the east the house appears to sit one storey high, in traditional materials forming the edge of a hard landscaped driveway. Entering into an open hallway, the house spills through a series of open-plan spaces that step down to a grand living/dining/public space. Each stepping radial space has a spectacular window which is set at a different angle picking up on its own uninterrupted country view, finishing with a picture wall of glazing across the loch. Alas this house has not been realised, in favour of a mundane deliverable timber framed cottage, by others to the client’s own design.
