Our challenge here was to adapt a traditional 1950’s bungalow, familiar to most places across Scotland, into a 21st Century flexible living space for a growing family. Similar to the Victorian villas we have worked with, the compartmentalised plan restricts room uses and family communication within the house. A major part of the proposal involved remodelling the ground floor area opening up existing space and adding new space to create a semi-open-plan layout. Extending the house into the garden with a corner-glazed sunroom with a transitional terrace connects the interior with the exterior utilising the length of garden to the rear. The sense of space achieved within the house comes as a surprise to visitors and changes any preconceived ideas that people may have had.
