House in Kensington, London

This small terraced house in a former stable building in London’s fashionable Kensington was (in our opinion) organised up side down. Removing all the internal walls and some floors including the roof offered the chance to reorganise the spaces. Living space formerly on the darker ground level was moved upstairs into a completely open-plan arrangement with a stair to the roof terrace. This new delicate metal frame stair rises into a large 3metre roof light that opens at the touch of button as you climb and is clad with solid oak treads. As a result, the newly accessible roof terrace is not obscured or cluttered by a stair enclosure and maintains the clean line of parapet along the elevation. Sleeping and showering areas have been relocated to the lower, darker level of the house with a solid cast stair appearing to be carved out of a large piece of stone.
