House in Bowling

Formerly the home of Sir William Burrell, this sandstone dwelling house has stunning views over the Clyde but failed to connect to the steeply sloping south facing garden. Our challenge here was to provide significant internal improvements to cater for elderly users with level access and a direct level connection to a new garden terrace via a ‘glass box’ extension. The terrace, which was formed using a steel frame, sits perched on the hillside with a radial galvanized steel balcony that provides uninterrupted views from seat level. To the west edge a large glazed panel provides a shelter from the prevailing breeze to encourage the elderly users to sit outside and enjoy the tremendous setting in comfort.
