House 3 in Pollokshields, Glasgow

On the top of the hill in Pollokshields conservation area, this house has a very poor connection to its large south facing sloping garden. Separated by a level difference of two metres we have designed a cascading stone terrace that spills into the garden. At the main house ground floor level opening up of the entire rear south facing rooms creates a giant living, eating, cooking fun space. The tall thin windows from the existing kitchen are ‘all joined up’ to create one large opening that connects to a high level terrace through a multi-fold door and provides welcome solar gain for the living area. A mid level terrace provides the connection between house and garden with plenty space for a big family dining table, bbq area, herb garden and a choice of directions to step down onto the lawn. Breaking up the descent into the garden with generous useful spaces helps to connect the interior with the exterior.
