Empire Exhibition Monument

Across the city buildings are demolished and replaced on a regular basis causing people to quickly forget what their environment used to look like. Glasgow’s great exhibitions have left us with few lasting structures including that of the 1938 Empire Exhibition. Our short listed proposal for The House for an Art Lover recreates the view of Thomas Taits Tower of Empire at Bellahouston Park. In contrast to the brief, which was to mark the exhibition at the tower base upon the hilltop, we chose to work around the park looking towards the hilltop. Three view points around the lower level of the park, near the entrance points focus the visitor’s gaze through a viewfinder. Between the viewfinder and hilltop there is a vertical laser cut steel silhouette of the tower, correctly scaled and oriented, overlaying the tremendous scale and drama that the temporary tower once had. The proposal has the flexibility to simulate other structures of the exhibition to allow everyone the possibility of seeing what was once there.
