The competition to redesign the underground facilities at Buchanan Street offered the potential to rework the low level underground areas however the brief required little more than a ticket desk and access canopy. Our design turned this on its head and opened up the lower level-ticketing platform to the street, spilling stairs, a lift and escalators down into the cavern, adding life and interest to both the street and station. A tower marks the view along Buchanan Lane from Queen Street station and also houses the lift connecting street level with platforms. A bridge across the space connects east and west pavements of Buchanan Street. Our design was selected by judges and given a special commendation for thinking of the bigger picture, however was not selected to be realised.
